После серьёзного выступления с утра об энергетической программе питбула Сара, освежив губную помаду, пошла резвиться в своём привычном амплуа. Найден новый "террорист", которого записали в Организацию Освобождения Палестины и на вечеринке у которого пять лет тому назад застукали Обаму. Это была прощальная вечеринка американского профессора истории и бывшего коллеги Обамы по университету Рашида Халиди, он уезжал из Чикаго в свой родной Нью-Йорк.

Когда Обама стал побеждать на первичных выборах, один из присутствовавших на вечеринке продал Los Angeles Times плёнку своей видеозаписи на условии конфиденциальности. Человеку не хотелось, чтобы люди знали, что это он свою видеозапись продал. Отсюда и требование саму запись не публиковать, иначе же можно понять с какого места она снималась и вспомнить, кто на этом месте сидел.

В апреле 2008 газета сделала статью по материалу записи, где было сказано среди прочего, что в адрес Израиля на этой арабской вечеринке звучали обвинения в терроризме (как удивительно!) Дальше газета пишет, что "Obama adopted a different tone in his comments and called for finding common ground." Из чего любой барракуде понятно, кто на самом деле является Обама. Но, кроме того, Сара Барракуда ещё и наехала на LA Times с обвинением, что та потакает террористам, отказываясь публиковать видеозапись.

Рашид Халиди род. 1950 в Нью-Йорке в палестинской семье, учился в Йейле и Оксфорде, профессор истории, член National Advisory Committee of the U.S. Interreligious Committee for Peace in the Middle East - "a national organization of Jews, Christians and Muslims dedicated to dialogue, education and advocacy for peace based on the deepest teachings of the three religious traditions."

The reason why a candidate for US presidency must genuflect to the supposed interests of Israel (or, more to the point, AIPEC) is two-fold.

First, the way the Electoral college works, it allows for the phenomenon we call the "swing states", whose outcome matters more than the popular vote. Thus, for example, we continue to have sanctions of Cuba supposedly because of Castro's dictatorship, even though sanctions tend to prop dictators and economically it would be better for most of US to have the sanctions lifted, since there is a small swing contingent of Florida voters who tend to decide how that state will vote, and for whom the sanctions are practically a litmus test.

Speaking of Florida, AIPEC has enough sway there to tip the balance one way or another. This is despite the fact that AIPEC doesn't represent the majority opinion of US jews, or even Israel jews; just check out the Israeli newspapers to see the diversity of their opinion.

The second reason is that there are a lot of fundamentalist christians waiting, or even pushing for, rapture, who believe that the Book of Revelations says something about a grand final battle in Jerusalem. They support the State of Israel just to see it destroyed in the Final Battle.

And if you think that doesn't matter: almost a third of US residents identify themselves as evangelical christians. That's a lot of votes.

Thank you for summarizing the reasons the US supports Israel so automatically, even fanatically at times. I don't believe that swaying the Florida retirees from NYC is a major reason why both Obama and McCain had to swear their full allegiance to Israel in such strong terms and within two hours of each other. Jews living in the US have many other means to affect the election outcome and they are not so uniformly pro-Israel (the ex-soviet jews are). Evangelicals are a serious constituency to worry about, although not all of them are so nutty as to push or the Rapture. However none of the above reasons can fully explain why it has become so mindlessly automatic to stand for Israel, right or wrong. 99.9% of Americans have not been born in Izrael and are not her citizens. Is it inconcievable that the interests of these two countries do not coincide all the time? Yet, that Israel has to be defended with utmost vigor has become an unquestionable idea, similar to the idea that the Nazis are war criminals. In fact, many folks liken anybody who is not pro-Israel as a Nazi.

Americans became so "mentally conditioned" to following the party line that simply repeating the same matra - Israel is to be defended by all means at any times - does the trick these days.

Меня больше всего пугает, что почетного профессора, гражданина США называют террористом только за то, что он палестинец! У меня такой человек наоборот вызывает уважение, что, не смотря на давление общества и навешанных ярлыков, человек добился много. Причем родился он в США еще до появления независимой Палестины, до убийства Роберта Кеннеди палестинцем. Вообщем такие у меня мысли.
