В Вашингтоне ценится лояльность, когда подчиненный голову в петлю сует за шефа. Тогда карьера продолжается несмотря ни на что. Примеров множество.
Дело прокуроров дохлое. Просто создают для кого-то plum job. Не исключено, что для того, чтобы отвлечь его от действительно реальных дел, как было с Фитцджеральдом.

I suppose Gonzales didn't have a clue and he kept his mouth glue. But he was absolutely loyal to the president, people who don't have a clue usually are.
